I think we can all agree that TikTok stole the spotlight in 2021. Pete Davidson’s sex life being a close second.
It came as a surprise to even me, though, that Tiktok would succeed where no social media platform before has – it taught me how to treat and style my hair.
After years of choosing shampoo and conditioner based on how big of a sale Ulta was having and how good they smelled (in that order), I actually look the time this year to learn about my hair type, how to take care of it, and how to style it. No more stripping shampoos or buying box dye in the midst of a mental breakdown. I committed multiple hair sins in 2020, and 2021 was penance.
Here’s to new hair beginnings.

BEST SHAMPOO
This is the only shampoo I’ve had luck with that really hydrates my dryness-prone hair without weighing my roots down too — and it still smells amazing. Ulta Beauty’s Jumbo Love Event happens twice a year — once in December/January and again in June/July. It’s an opportunity to save 50% on the best liter-size hair care, including shampoo and conditioner and styling products. Redken products are also frequently on Ulta’s Buy One Get One 50% Off Sale.
BEST CONDITIONER
A perfect pairing to the shampoo above.
BEST DRY SHAMPOO
Would any of us survive post-covid life without dry shampoo? I gave up on aerosol dry shampoos this year after constant disappointment and white residue. This powder-based one does the trick. I also use it on clean hair to lift my roots after I curl it. Extra tousled look, extra volume, and no white residue. We love to see it.
BEST HAIR MASK
I use this mask once a week…or let’s be honest whenever I remember. I should always remember because it’s fantastic. It smells sweet and truly edible, but also delivers some much-needed hydration to refresh highlighted hair when I need it most.
BEST LEAVE-IN CONDITIONER
This wins my best haircare new beauty find of 2021! I spray this liberally on my freshly washed hair, it works as a heat protectant by coating the hair, and helps nourish my dry tangly strands. It smells tropical, with a kick of ginger, and makes my hair so soft! The Nutriplenish line of shampoo and conditioner is great too, albeit a little pricey.
BEST STYLING SPRAY
I know I keep going on about how good everything smells, as if that’s the most important quality in a hair product, but it’s important to me okay! If the smell doesn’t transport me to a Palm Springs spa resort, you can keep it, and this one passes the test!! This style-prep helps boost volume when I blow-dry and also adds texture and volume to dry hair between wash days.
BEST HEAT PROTECTANT
I stumbled upon this at Marshall’s and it quickly became a staple in my routine. Does its job as a heat protectant, but also delivers a gorgeous dose of shine.
BEST ROUND BRUSH
All those style prep products would be for nothing without the right tools. This 2″ tourmaline round brush helps speed up my blow-drying time and delivers the salon blowout look at home!
BEST COMB
This might seem like a given, but it wasn’t until this year I actually bought the right tool to make a perfect part. If you’ve been using a fingernail, or the end of a brush that really isn’t cutting it, just invest.
BEST DETANGLING BRUSH
This little brush actually detangles my hair without ripping and breaking strands. Good for wet or dry hair, and it’s my favorite color 🙂
BEST TEXTURE SPRAY
My hair used to be shoulder-length, and I would wave it out with a flat iron, spray this texture spray all over at the end and give it a really good shake. It gives the best lived in, messy, Serena Van Der Woodsen cool girl vibe you could ask for. I’ve always been impressed with this product as someone with naturally no texture in their hair, this helps my curls stick.
BEST HAIRSPRAY
I set my style with this flexible hold spray that always gets the job done. I keep a travel-size one in my carry-on at all times, I’m useless without it.
